Curb the Cravings for Sweets

I’m always a skeptic when it comes to “easy” ways to lose weight, to “drop the pounds” or to “get skinny fast.” It’s not real life. Real life means putting work and effort into everything you do, weight loss is no different.

I’m also a realist. I know that craving sweets is a real thing, it’s not an excuse. Sometimes, even after a big meal, you need just “one more bite” of something sweet…even if you really don’t. So, something to help in that department, to satisfy cravings and to give your body a chance to catch up in an all natural way? Bring it on.

When I heard about MealEnders and the opportunity to review them, I was excited! It seemed like a good complement to a program that included healthy eating and exercise – not as a scheme or replacement for hard work.

meal enders one

Even more surprising was the taste. MealEnders come in four different flavors: cinnamon (my favorite), chocolate mint (a close second!), Mocha and Citrus. They’re natural, with ingredients that anyone reading the label can understand, plus, each MealEnders signaling lozenge contains only two grams of sugar, 15 calories, and is low-fat, stimulant-free, gluten-free, kosher, and contains no high fructose corn syrup or MSG. MealEnders are food-based and, therefore, regulated by the FDA as a food product. This was exciting to me!

Not sure how a little lozenge can do so much? Here’s what MealEnders has to say:

MealEnders consist of two components: a sweet, outer reward layer and a cooling/tingling inner core. The outer layer provides a measured dose of “dessert,” usually associated with the end of a meal. The inner core engages the trigeminal nerve (the nerve that senses “taste” sensations in the mouth) with long-lasting cooling/tingling sensations to cue the end of eating and clear the palate.

By keeping your mouth and mind occupied for up to 20 minutes (the Overeating Zone—when you are full, but often continue to eat because your brain has not yet received the “fullness” signal), MealEnders naturally transition you away from the desire to overindulge, giving your body’s natural satiety process time to catch up and let you know your full.

meal enders two

MealEnders are a tool, not a magic elixir, and work on a behavioral, sensory and psychological level in the following ways:

BEHAVIORAL • Establish an important chronological marker for meal- and snack-end • Fill the 20-minute gap until normal satiety signals reach the brain • Create a pause in eating patterns so healthier behaviors may be established • Break the cycle of eating and chewing

SENSORY • Provide a measured sweet cue for dessert replacement (which tastes delicious, in my opinion!), followed by a palate cleansing to reduce cravings • Engage the trigeminal nerve to cue the cessation of eating • Engage taste receptors to transition you away from foods being consumed • Alter anticipated taste of additional food • Temporarily modify olfactory perception — often a cause of overeating

PSYCHOLOGICAL • Heighten mindfulness of natural digestive rhythms • Create habitual cueing of meal completion • Train the mind to recognize healthy portion sizes • Empower a sense of control.

I allowed a few friends and family members to give them a try. While all reactions were mixed as far as what were the best flavors, everyone was a fan and could agree that the urge to add dessert after finishing a lozenge was almost gone. Note, it’s not a magic potion. Give yourself enough time and you could still crave something sweet, there’s no substitute for a little will-power!!

Breakaway Boot Camp: Make it Happen at Home

breakaway boot campFollowing in my theme of finding ways to fit fitness in regardless of your schedule or location, I have an exciting program to share with you!

Here’s the thing. I know what it’s like to search online for workouts, hoping that you’re doing them correctly or that you’ll see the results you’re hoping for. I know what it’s like to peruse online videos day after day or to fall into a workout routine just because you’re comfortable or don’t know where else to start. I also know what it’s like to hear about awesome workout programs only to find out that they’ll break the bank (while the $300-500 programs may promise results and have impressive testimonials, that’s an awfully big gamble only to find out it’s not the right workout for you).

What if there was a program that didn’t require going through a salesperson, or coach, and that took care of the whole picture – nutrition, workouts that vary, etc. – and that could take place on your own time, at your own home, with no added equipment? I’d say that’d be a win, and that’s what I’ve been looking for.

This made me really excited to check out Girls Gone Sporty’s Breakaway Bootcamp. I heard about the program because I’ve been a Girls Gone Sporty ambassador for the past year. I believe in what they stand for: empowering women at all stages of fitness to find ways to become stronger, healthier and happier. What’s better than that?

The Breakaway Bootcamp allows women to start at every time and to break free of mental and physical limitations that have held them back. One purchase allows lifetime access to the 4-week program, that can be repeated at any time. It’s a total body program that inspires confidence and mental clarity without focusing solely on the number on the scale. It can be modified to meet all levels of fitness: beginners, intermediate and advanced. If you’re ready to rock this year, consider looking into it.

The program includes the three versions listed above by skill level along with:

  • a full 4-week program complete and an e-book.
  • 20 workouts for each skill level.
  • 12 full-length workout videos to follow along at home and complete at any time.
  • weekly blog posts meant to provide motivation.
  • a 3-day food assessment complete with personalized feedback and nutrition suggestions to making real changes.
  • access to 24-7 feedback, advice and modifications based on personal questions and concerns.

While equipment is not necessary, basic dumbbells and a yoga mat are helpful.

All of this – remember, lifetime access from anywhere – for $100. To me, that’s a worthwhile investment. What do you think? Ready to make a change? Sign up today!

Creamy Basil Tomato Soup with Hemp Hearts!

I’m always up for trying something new, especially when it comes to power foods that help fuel my family the right way. So, when I was given the opportunity to review Manitoba Harvest’s Hemp Hearts, I was pretty excited.

Soup 3

Packed with 10 grams of plant-based protein and 10 grams of Omegas per serving, these raw shelled hemp seeds pack a whole lot into a little pack. When the package arrived, I took the time to taste them and was pleasantly surprised. I find that, generally, raw “healthy” foods have a bitter or unpleasant flavor. Not these! They honestly tasted like softer versions of sunflower seeds and were delicious plain.

Soup 2

But, you all know that I like to find ways to incorporate new things into new recipes. While these hemp hearts would be absolutely delicious sprinkled onto a salad, cereal or yogurt, I wanted to do something a little different. So, I incorporated them into a creamy basil tomato soup. The outcome? Delish! Check it out below!

Want to incorporate these flavorful goodies into your own healthy eating program? Give them a try today. By using the code HHSweatPink14 at manitobaharvest.comyou’ll receive 20% off your order between now and November 30. Don’t miss this awesome opportunity!

Soup 1

Creamy Baked Tomato Basil Soup with Hemp Hearts

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium onion sliced thin
  • 2 tsp fresh minced garlic
  • 1 4-ounce can tomato paste
  • 2 28-ounce cans of diced or pureed tomatoes
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 30 grams Manitoba Hemp Hearts
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 TBS butter
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup skim or 1 percent milk
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil or 2 TB dried basil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 slice bread (I used gluten free)
  • Shredded cheese to top each bowl

Directions:

  • Melt butter in sauce pan and add basil, garlic, oregano and onions. Simmer until golden brown.
  • Incorporate the tomato paste, canned tomatoes, hemp hearts, water, sugar and vinegar. Heat to a light boil.
  • Reduce heat to medium, cover and allow to simmer for 45-minutes to an hour.
  • If you like a smooth soup (I do!) remove from heat and puree in a food processor until your desired texture is reached.
  • Add in the milk, salt and pepper.
  • Pour soup into ramekins, add bread and cheese. Broil for 5-10 minutes, until cheese is melted and bread is golden brown.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Water Bottles for Life On the Go

As a Mom of two busy little ones, a runner and the wife of a runner, I understand life on the go. I also understand that to fuel that life, the right products make all the difference. When it comes to water bottles and food storage systems, I had – until now – a hard time finding a solution that fit our lifestyle and our priorities as a family.

Introducing Nalgene.

Tagged with “A bottle for every adventure,” I was intrigued. I was also excited to give it a go and couldn’t wait to start testing the day this group of products arrived on my front steps!

nalgene

It seemed as though there was something for the whole family; that early assessment was 100% correct.

I started out that night by bringing the fun blue On-the-Fly and Grip-n-Gulp bottles on our family walk. The boys were so excited to have a water bottle like Mommy…it’s hard to find that sort of thing!

nalgene 1

The OTF was easy for my oldest to grip and to manage the opening and closing. He was so proud!

nalgene 2

The grip-n-gulp was great for my little guy. It didn’t spill, crack or scratch, even after multiple “throws.” What can I say, he has an arm :). He could easily get a drink and I didn’t have to worry about the mess that generally follows toddler drinks on the go!

I have to say, my 24 ounce OTF – the same model as the 12 ounce but better for adults – was a great addition to my own lifestyle. I’ve kept it on my desk to keep hydrated during the day, have brought it to the gym and carry it around wherever I go!

Nalgene 5

The color is wonderful, but, my favorite feature is the opening. With a single click, I have access to a clean mouthpiece that’s easy to drink from and just as easy to close back up. No mess, no leaking, no fuss means perfect in my book.

Take a closer look at the opening here:

nalgene 4

The prices are reasonable, but some of my favorite features are:

  • Easy cleaning – all of my samples have gone through the dishwasher without any cracking or discoloration and we run on high heat/sanitize every time.
  • Zero leaking. I can’t say that enough.
  • A lifetime guarantee. I don’t see any reason to use it, but all Nalgene products come with a guaranteed replacement if something goes wrong.
  • They’re made in the USA…this matters to me.
  • BPA and BPS free – no worries about chemicals.

All in all, these products were fantastic – I cannot think of a single complaint. I can say with confidence that Nalgene products are an excellent solution for families on the go and athletes looking for products to improve their training regimens.

Note: These products were sent to me to review. I was not compensated for the review – these opinions are my own. If I am not impressed by a product, I will not share it with my readers! These opinions are my own!

What Fuels Your Morning?

Mornings are essential to making it through the day. By eating the right foods at the start, you’re body is primed for action; your metabolism speeds up and your body is ready to consume foods of a similar nutrition level throughout the rest of the day. Start off hungry or on the wrong foot and you can go downhill…fast! This is something I’ve learned and really responded to lately. But, it’s an important lesson for everyone.

That’s why I was so excited when I heard about MyOatmeal.com. Before you start to think that healthy oatmeal is plain old healthy oatmeal and there’s not a lot of room to improve, think again. Solid nutrition doesn’t have to be boring, and this company brings this idea to life in big ways.

By allowing customers to customize their own flavors, MyOatmeal.com takes mornings to a whole new level. Visitors are able to customize:

  • Package size: 1 lb, 2.25 lb or 4lb
  • Oat types: quick rolled instant, 5 grain rolled oats & flax, steel cut whole oats, signature smash blend, gluten free quick oats (a must in my house!) and organic, gluten free rolled oats
  • Flavoring: think of the most detailed coffee shop flavor list and then expand it – creme brulee, cake, smores and so many more
  • Fruits: 18 options!
  • Nuts and seeds: everything from chia and flax seeds to powdered peanut butter and almonds – big nutritional value
  • Sweeteners: brown cane to monk fruit, any taste bud can be satisfied.
  •  Shipping options: ongoing, one time, etc.

Bottom line: there are over 2 million flavor combinations that can be created. Does it get better than this?

I didn’t think so; which is why I had to give it a try.

I created my blends of choice online and couldn’t wait for them to arrive (which they did, quickly!). From there, I couldn’t wait to jump in, which is why our family had oatmeal for dinner that night :).

My first flavor? Caramel Apple Cheesecake (named by me).

Myoatmeal1

I was excited, check out the nutritional information above, which I knew ahead of time, since it was clearly displayed during the online creation process.

The smell upon opening the bag was wonderful and I could see the apple chunks I’d ordered easily.

myoatmeal2

My Blend?

  • Gluten free quick oats
  • Dulce de Leche and Cheesecake flavors
  • Light brown sugar
  • Dried apples

The verdict? Delicious.

myoatmeal3

I mixed 1/4 cup oatmeal with 1/2 cup almond milk (this is my go-to for oatmeal, the husband and kids used water per the package directions).  It was a hit. The whole family enjoyed it and no additional flavors or sugars were needed. It was filling and has become our go-to. From a simple, fun creation process to a final product that exceeded expectations, I expect to be a loyal myoatmeal.com customer for a long time.

Want to check it out yourself? Visit MyOatmeal.com and create a custom blend! Even better? Use the code healthy15 for 15% off your order! What are you waiting for?

Note: I was provided samples from MyOatmeal.com free of charge for review. But, you know I don’t give a positive review unless I stand behind the product! If I say I love it, I mean it! 🙂
